The security of a fixing made with a machine screw has become a major business over the past few years. The need for such security has become essential for a variety of reasons, some of them have more merit than others but all of them have resulted in a completely new range of tightening systems.
The first reason for security was one in which a manufacturer preserved the integrity of his machine by denying unauthorised access, this was particularly useful for preserving all repairs for the manufacturer to resolve at profitable prices. The standard flat bladed screw tightening system can be undone by anyone, another major system uses a star shaped recess in the screw head similar in nature to the posi-drive but a different shape, this again requires a different screwdriver.
This is one of the major problems with any security system which loses its security defence the moment the specialty screwdrivers become available to all so it is likely that these will continue to change in future years.
